Croydon stands at the edge of the North Downs on the outskirts of Greater London. Originally an Iron Age settlement, the town developed into the centre of an estate owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury. By the 16 th Century Croydon Palace and its market place were well established with Croydon becoming a stop-over for stage coaches travelling to Brighton. The arrival of the Railway further increased its popularity with the spreading Victorian middle classes.
Today Croydon is an important retail centre which includes the Whitgift and Centrale centres and will soon benefit from a new development for the Croydon gateway site. The Croydon Clocktower art centre contains the Croydon museum and Riesco Gallery. The Fairfield Halls entertainment centre has played host to a variety of musical events and is set for redevelopment as part of Croydon 2020.
