Guildford

Guildford has existed as a settlement since Saxon times, when the Castle guarded the ford across the River Wey and the ancient Pilgrims way through the surrounding hills. The keep of the castle, sacked and later rebuilt by William the Conqueror, was partially restored by the Victorians and further restored in 2004. It now forms the centre piece of Guildford ’s ornamental gardens.

Guildford today has an attractive shopping centre with granite cobbled streets and plentiful pubs, restaurants and cafes. A bustling farmers market occupies the town every Tuesday with additional markets on Friday and Saturday in North Street. Guildford also boasts a museum, busy art gallery and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Local events include the Guildfest in Stoke Park each summer and the Surrey Agricultural County show on the 2nd bank holiday Monday in May.
