Romford, formerly part of Essex and now reclassified as part of Greater London, is situated on the eastern edge of the Capital in the borough of Havering. Romford has been a market town since the 13th Century. It is now home to the Liberty shopping centre a recent development, designed to compete with the nearby Lakeside and Bluewater shopping centres.
Nearby Barking was the original site of Barking Abbey, once used by William the Conqueror but largely destroyed following the dissolution of the monasteries. Today only the curfew tower and the later St Margaret’s Church remain. Barking is perhaps most famous for its dockyards and historic links with the fishing industry. Barking is now targeted for urban regeneration and plans are underway for a new town square and several improved public spaces.
